About Noord

A Sanctuary in Darkness

In a world shaped by constant stimulation, true stillness has become increasingly rare.

At Noord Darkness Retreats we offer a carefully designed environment where individuals can spend time in complete darkness, away from external distractions and everyday demands.

As the first dedicated center of its kind in the Nordics, Noord has been among the early initiatives introducing and exploring darkness retreats as a practice for rest, reflection and inner exploration.

Our Story

Noord began as GlΓ€nta in 2022, the first dedicated darkness retreat center in the Nordics. But our journey started even earlier in 2019, born from a deep curiosity about the transformative power of darkness. What began as a personal exploration evolved into a mission to create a space for mental clarity, emotional balance and inner transformation.

In 2025 we became Noord, a name that reflects our international vision and the next chapter of our work. Moving forward, we are expanding beyond retreats. Noord is gradually developing into a platform for exploration, research collaboration and education around darkness immersions and contemplative practices.

Our work seeks to contribute to a thoughtful dialogue between traditional contemplative practices and modern research, in a world increasingly shaped by constant stimulation.

Our Philosophy

We believe that inner growth plays an important role in both personal well-being and positive change in the world. Inspired by the Inner Development Goals (IDG) framework, we emphasize the importance of cultivating qualities such as self-awareness, emotional resilience, and mental clarity as foundations for meaningful change, both within ourselves and in society.

Our darkness retreats offer a setting of stillness where these qualities can be explored and developed through reflection and inward attention.

Our Commitment to Research

At Noord, we are interested in contributing to a deeper understanding of darkness retreats through collaboration with scientific research. While the practice has roots in ancient contemplative traditions, modern research is only beginning to explore the effects of extended time in darkness.

Areas of interest include how sensory reduction environments may relate to attention, perception, emotional processing, and stress regulation.

By encouraging dialogue between traditional practices and modern science, we hope to contribute to a growing body of knowledge around darkness retreats as a space for rest, reflection, and inner exploration.

Our Approach

🏑 Space – Carefully designed dark rooms that minimize external sensory input, creating a calm environment for rest and reflection.

πŸ”¬ Science – Our retreats are informed by existing research related to sensory deprivation, meditation, and consciousness studies..

✨ Support – While the darkness invites inward reflection, our role is to ensure participants feel safe, prepared, and supported throughout the experience.

Our Philosophy

We believe inner growth plays an important role in both personal well-being and positive change in the world. Inspired by the Inner Development Goals (IDG) framework, we emphasize qualities such as self-awareness, emotional resilience, and mental clarity.

Our retreats offer a quiet setting where these qualities can be explored through reflection and inward attention.

Our Commitment to Research

At Noord, we are interested in advancing the understanding of darkness retreats through research. Rooted in ancient traditions, the practice is only beginning to be explored in modern scientific contexts.

Our aim is to support dialogue between traditional knowledge and contemporary research on darkness retreats.

Our Approach

🏑 Space – Carefully designed dark rooms that provide complete sensory isolation, allowing your mind to rest and recalibrate.

πŸ”¬ Science – Our retreats are based on existing psychological research on sensory deprivation, consciousness studies, and meditation.

✨ Support – While the darkness invites you to journey inward, we are here to ensure you feel safe, grounded, and prepared throughout your experience.

The Team

The Noord team brings together diverse expertise in clinical diagnostics, psychology, behavioral and health informatics, innovation, business development and retreat facilitation. This unique combination allows us to bridge scientific research with experiential insight. This balance shapes how we design our retreats and ensures they are both carefully considered and deeply intentional.

What unites us is not only our professional backgrounds but also our personal journeys. Through exploring inner processes through darkness retreats, meditation and other forms of self inquiry, we share a deep appreciation for the depth of inner work.

Our experiences have taught us that stillness is not about escape. It is about turning inward and meeting what arises with openness, presence and curiosity. This belief informs how we guide and support each guest and helps us create an environment where they feel safe, grounded and empowered throughout their journey.

At Noord we see ourselves as both practitioners and learners. We are committed to deepening our understanding of darkness retreats while remaining humble in the face of all we have yet to discover. Noord is a place for both personal exploration and shared learning, where we seek to contribute to a more reflective and conscious world.
